Walking and Hiking Looks Ahead to 2012 A

t the end of each year, the Walking and Hiking committee takes a look at the outings and events of the past year, evaluates them and sets into motion the planning for 2012. Popular walks and hikes are likely repeated; others are replaced. The goal of the program is to offer a variety of outings and activities for a variety of interests and skill levels, hoping not just to entice members to participate, but to inspire those who cannot participate as scheduled to get out and explore walk- ways, pathways and trails on their own or with other groups. The intent is not to be all things for all people, but rather to offer a variety of possibilities.

Looking back at 2011, there were more than 200 activities from which to choose. There were 40 different midweek urban walks, 15 hikes in Forest Park, seven Sunday Family Walks, seven evening

armchair presentations that required no walking, and 12 evening walks, some of which included stops for food. Not surpris- ingly, outings with some sort of culinary enticement were among the most popular. There were scheduled hikes of various degrees of difficulty, setting foot in every direction from Portland. Mount St. Helens, a favorite destination to the north, held on to its snow well into August, so in the fall, hikers headed that direction a half dozen times to take advantage of a small window of great weather. Hikers headed west towards the coast six times, as well. To help members complete trails in the 25 Trails, 25 Years Columbia River Gorge Challenge, there were 22 hikes in the Gorge. And farther east, there were all the spectacular destinations on and near Mount Hood. That is just a few of the areas explored on foot.
