MAC’s Listen and Learn lecture series brings speakers to the club to discuss geology, art, life on the road and much more

ortland-based author, grandmother and traveler Alyce Cornyn-Selby likes to point out that she spent the better part of 2002 “going topless.” Topless, as in traveling 9,000 miles around America in a reproduction of a 1920s-era Bugatti Model 35 roadster with no doors, no passenger seat, and indeed, no top. Cornyn-Selby is among the speakers MAC hosts as part of an educational lecture series called “Listen and Learn” in 2012. Members Events developed the series in response to member feedback. The series features a morning and evening

lecture during most months and considers topics such as health and medicine, travel and culture, Portland and the Northwest, art, finance, history, professional devel- opment and more. All lectures cost $5 for members and $7 for guests, unless otherwise specified, and require advance registration.


The Magnificent Geological History of Oregon


Tuesday, Jan. 10, 9-10 a.m. Oregon is a veritable geological wonderland. Its natural environments are amazingly diverse and include Crater Lake, Steens Mountain, the Wallowas, the Oregon Caves, the Columbia River Gorge and the coast. The characteristics of each region evolved in their own unique


way. Dr. Scott Burns, a Portland State Uuniversity professor, takes members on a tour of the state, connecting every region with a time line and showing how the state evolved. It is a great way to learn about the natural history heritage that this amazing state offers.
