Icarus soars in MAC Lobby
ne of the largely unrecognized treasures of the Multnomah Athletic Club is the wonderful art collection. To that end, the Art Subcommittee plan to occasionally feature art in the club in The Winged M.

“Icarus” (1979) by famed sculptor Manuel Izquierdo, greets visitors to the High Lounge. Standing an impressive 10 feet, the sculpture captures the majesty and tragedy of the Greek myth of Icarus and his attempt to fly, only to plunge to earth when the glue on his feathered wings melts as he flies too close to the sun. The sculpture is made of steel alloy with a matte silver finish. It is a composite of joined irregular geometric forms.
Manuel Izquierdo is considered one of the essential figures in Portland’s midcentury art world. Born around 1925 (he did not know with certainty), he fled his birth home of Madrid in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Eventually settling in Portland, he made some of the most lyrical sculptures of his generation. Izquierdo is remembered for his abstract forms and his recurring explora- tion of organic, biomorphic forms and the nature of metamorphosis. Widely collected and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, he taught for more than 40 years at the Portland Museum Art School. His difficult and chaotic child- hood gave him a lasting toughness, but also an epicurean taste and larger-than-life personality. He died in 2009.
Anyone who would like to hear more about a piece of art in the club may contact the art subcommittee. The committee plans to conduct tours in the near future.
