INTRO DR. DEMO DEMO OF THE MONTH
Jerzey Street Band - Breaking Radio Silence
www.jerzeystreetband.com
Melodic country rock from Manchester. We Like. If this CD’s title alludes to frustration over lack of mainstream radio airplay, judging by this authentic sounding slice of soulful Americana, which blows in via the Pennines courtesy of Mancunian country rockers Jerzey Street Band, a slot on Bob Harris Country surely can’t be far away. This is breezy modern country rock with a soulful edge that recalls Southside Johnny & The Ashbury Dukes. Easy on the ear and well crafted; this is a solid set of tunes that are only let down by a couple of fl at
spots on some of the lead vocals. Whereas once-upon-a-time anything faintly alluding to country music was written off as old hat, contemporary audiences are far more clued-in and Jerzey Street band obviously know their genre inside out. Quality!
Tommy Blaize Band - Don’t Ya Love Life
www.tommyblaizeband.com
BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing singer & band make an album of original songs. Bloody good it is, too! Vocalist Tommy Blaize fronts the live band on TV’s Strictly Come Dancing and here he ropes in a few buddies from the Strictly bandstand to breath life into a set of slick self-penned pop/soul tunes. The performances are absolutely spot-on, the production gleams like the bonnet of a freshly polished Ferrari and Blaize’s wonderfully fl exible voice seamlessly embraces silky ballads or strutting up-tempo numbers with the
professionalism and faultless accuracy of a top session man. This slickness may also be the LPs only fault; Still, it’s interesting to hear these musicians in a fresh context, even if it might be more fun to really hear them let rip.
Nwam Cho - Last Days of Kwan
www.myspace.com/lastdaysofkwan
Soothing ambient guitar sounds from Anglo/Asian loopsmith.
Experimental ambient guitar music isn’t everybody’s cup of nectar but London-based guitarist Nwam Cho is an accomplished master of the art. Cho builds his tracks using multiple layers of guitar that provide a gently shifting background for his understated vocal.
This seductive musical mist might not exactly set the old feet a’tapping but it is nevertheless skillfully delivered and has a real understand charm. Television producers seeking suitable atmospheric soundtracks for nature documentaries should apply here fi rst.
We Cry Hero - So Tell Me
www.myspace.com/wecryhero
Impressive single from lachrymose-inclined Kent quintet.
Despite only having been together just over a year, kent-based band We Cry Hero have delivered an impressive independent single that demonstrates their versatility. A-side So Tell Me harnesses an catchy synth-pop hook to an epic chorus in the Coldplay/Maroon Five mold, whilst the fl ip New You is a more refl ective acoustic ballad featuring some very tasteful guitar work. We Cry Hero sound like a very focussed professional band.
