LICKS & TIPS

Ex 2: Now we’re going to mix it up a little. We know that the relative 5ths are up there at the 12th fret so we’re going to move the tapped notes up a little to correspond with the E minor Pentatonic. Effectively tapping the note our left hand hammers on to in the A minor Pentatonic. So if your left hand hammers 5 to 7 on the A string you’ll tap on the 14th for example. This lick is a little more similar to something Guthrie Govan might employ although to get a touch closer to how Guthrie does it you’d have to hammer on from nowhere with the left hand just to really mess with your head (it’d give you a good excuse to get a hair band around the nut end of the neck though!).

Ex 3: With this final lick we’re going to work on gradually building up our speed until everything flows nice and smooth. You’ll have to employ two fingers on your right hand to pull this one off; we recommend that you use your second and ring fingers to tap the lick or tuck your pick away and use your index and second or third, whichever works best for you. Here we are doing the E minor Pentatonic mirror trick again but only using two notes per string as we ascend through the scale using string skipping. We round the lick off with the more familiar three note per string pattern. PM

TAP OF THE GODS

Our Guru of all things Shred-tastic, Hayden Hewitt, shows you how to let your fingers do the talking with some cheeky pentatonic tapping licks in A minor.

After last month’s warm up exercises I figure it’s time we got back to something a little more fun and what could be more fun than some cheeky little tapping licks? We’re going to base these licks around our good friend the pentatonic scale (this time in the key of A minor) but you can of course use this technique with any scale that takes your fancy.

Ex1: Starting with our left hand occupying the A minor pentatonic position starting at the fifth fret on the low E string. Figure one illustrates a vaguely Eddie Van Halen style tapping lick that demonstrates the art of using sweet-sounding 5ths in our tapping. In this instance we are tapping a 5th above the lowest note on each string so if you are fingering an A note with your left hand you’ll be tapping an E note with your right (or vice versa if you’re left handed, obviously). If you’re still not quite au fait with figuring out the notes it’s pretty easy to find a 5th. When you play power chords you already use them because power chords are also known as ‘Root 5th’ chords. So find your root note, add the fifth to complete your power chord. Easy!
