Rise Media is a young company comprising five graduates from UCA Farnham’s Digital & Screen Arts course, who have set up their own company to produce a wide variety of promo videos for a broad raft of corporate clients. Despite being only up and running for just over a year Rise Media’s clients include a leading British Superbike team but Rise Media’s Mark Lunt explains that the high quality music videos – both live and high concept promo shoots – produced by his team form the main backbone of his company’s business. “Music videos are often a big concept involving lots of shoots. Usually, a music video takes two or three weeks for pre-production and shoot then you’re probably looking at a week for that for pre-production and post work. Tour videos and live shoots that require a compilation from several locations can take longer, depending on the timings.”
“Glastonbury was an amazing experience! They had to tow us and our gear through the mud on quad bikes…”
When it comes to location shoots, Mark and his team recall their weekend covering the Arcadia stage for Glastonbury 2011 as one of the most physically demanding. “We were there for the whole week and it was an amazing experience,”
Mark recalls, “We had to lug tripods; the cameras and lighting gear through the mud to the Arcadia stage. They had to take us across the site on quad bikes because we were literally bogged down in mud! It all looks very glamorous but behind the scenes it was a lot of effort, despite it being fun.” It doesn’t end there, either. Rise Media is currently engaged in another
project that tests their strength, stamina, not to mention courage, to the limit: the crew is currently filming a mountain climbing documentary in the north of England’s rugged Peak District. “In order to get to the location we had to climb with a remote controlled helicopter, which was going to be our camera-mount to get areal shots, plus

Depending on the job, it varies as to how much say we have creatively. Some clients or artists come to us with a very clear idea of what they want to achieve, whilst some others require us to help come up with the concept at the pre-production stage; which is good for us because it gets our creative juices flowing. There is always a close working relationship with the client and often by the time we’ve finished the pre-production stage the project has evolved into something much better than the original content.”

he advent of digital media has gifted many bands and musicians with the opportunity to create their own promotional videos, and some of the ones we’ve seen have been quite brilliant! However, as anyone who has tried to video anything from a gig to wedding will doubtless
our usual equipment, “Mark recalls, “It was very physically demanding.” This proven ability to cope with all situations aside, when asked to list the essential qualities that any aspiring professional video production company needs, Mark offers a succinct answer: “Firstly you need a good eye for the type of thing the audience will want to see but the most important thing is to be really focused. Obviously we have a good basic grounding in video production and post production work.
