Neon’s Susan Hilton speaks to Leopold’s owners Mark and Kris
Mark Walker and his partner Kris have created a unique dining experience right in the heart of lucky Northampton.
Mark’s vision of creating an old fashioned tea room with a contemporary accent, his background in the airline business and managing a busy Steakhouse pub, gaining the experience necessary in the catering and service industry should be ‘just the ticket’ for success. Kris on the other hand, being Belgian had his mind set on opening a chocolate shop. They combined ideas, Leopold’s chocolate and coffee house was born.
Named after King Leopold I, first king of the Belgians, and being nephew to our own Queen Victoria..... Talking of Victoria, you must try their sponge cake, a good 5 inches deep and homemade, Leopold’s have their own personal baker on tap so you can expect the best afternoon tea to be had for miles. Your own pot of tea, decent scones, jam and clotted cream of course, along with canapes and more, all served with the best white china. Besides delightful homemade cakes, the baker makes the most delicious cheesecakes. Then there’s waffles and crepes, you hardly know where to begin!
Less of a sweet tooth? Feast on baguettes and lovely sandwiches. Children have their own menu selection too. There’s 15 different types of tea and lovely coffee by Illy.
If you are a chocolate lover then hot chocolate served in a jug along with a separate pot of marshmallows and a jug of fresh cream might be your idea of heaven especially when every hot drink ordered comes with a free fresh Belgian chocolate by the famous Leonidas. Stocked by direct delivery from Brussels, the long counter holds around 35 fresh Belgian chocolates. Stuck for choice then you may upgrade to 5 with your drink and take home (if you have any left) wrapped in a box just like they do in Belgium.
With Christmas in mind there will also be presentation boxes and even hampers. The best quality food and ingredients coupled with a polite, efficient table service and a friendly atmosphere together create the Leopold's experience where chocolate heaven begins.
