The RSPCA Ball Suki & Snowball

The Ball at the Kettering Park Hotel was the first event of its kind to be held by the Northamptonshire Branch of the RSPCA and raised £3000; money urgently needed for their essential work.

The Northamptonshire branch is completely self financed by fundraising and the shops in the county. It receives no help from the government being a registered charity in its own right and works with the inspectors from the National Society by taking in the animals they deal with and bringing them back to full health with the aim of re-homing them for a better life.

At present the branch does not have a small animal facility in the county and the money to fund this needs to be raised.

Jacqui Burgess, the Branch Manager explained, “wildlife, farm animals and horse are always sent to specially set up centres, whilst there is no facility for dogs in Northamptonshire and these have to be sent to another county. With regard to small animals, cats, rabbits and exotics, these are primarily in the care of the 25 to 30 voluntary fosterers throughout the county.

This situation can make re-homing difficult, as viewing has to take place in foster homes and, quite naturally, people looking to adopt an animal do like to see a few of the animals in the care of the RSPCA before they can decide which animal suits them and their lifestyle.” A re-homing centre will overcome this.

It will give the branch a good base for working with the animals and will mean they will be able to help even more than they currently achieve, so, over the next few years they are determined in their hope to raise the funding for this facility.

If, like us at NEON, you had not realised that the local branch of the RSPCA is completely self funded and that there is no re-homing centre at present we would urge you, particularly though not exclusively, at this time of year, to help in whatever way you can through fundraising, supporting the shops or volunteering your help there, fostering, organising, helping with transport or supporting their events.

In fact, once we realised we could do something to help, we volunteered to do something mutually beneficial. As I type this out, a 5 week old kitten, who was found on an industrial estate on Sunday, is having a nap in her basket in my dining room; she enjoyed our games and her food this morning but she has a lot of growing to do.

It costs me nothing but a bit of time and, in a few weeks, when she is more robust I hope that somebody will fall in love with her and give her the permanent caring home she and many others deserve.
