True Star…the program for youths

Executive Directors DeAnna McLeary and Na-Tae’ Thompson started True Star -- a non-profit multimedia organization -- in 2004 as four-page newsletter with one journalism program and 17 stu-

dents. They have since grown the organization to eight programs that employ 150 student apprentices and more than seven adult instructors who collectively produce the 44- page quarterly True Star magazine

and its sister publication for middle school students, True Star Jr. as well as teen events.

They serve youth that often have unsupervised after-school hours. Teen participants get to work along-

side students from various cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, to express themselves in innovative ways and understand their role and responsibility as contributing adults to society.

True Star programs are hosted in conjunction with their core partners After School Matters and Chicago Public Schools.
