Winners of STD and HIV/AIDS awareness campaign to be announced this week

Teen finalists of the 5th Annual Walgreens Expression Challenge art & literacy contest to heighten awareness about teen health epidemics will be announced Dec. 2 at Gallery 37. High school students in Chicago and St. Louis between ages 13 and 19 were encouraged to show their graphic, photography, video or writ- ing talents to heighten the awareness of sexually transmitted diseases among their peers. According to a 2011 report issued by the Chicago Public Schools Office of Special


Education & Supports, Chicago ranks first and second for the highest rates nationwide of gonor- rhea and Chlamydia among youth ages 15 to 19 and there was a 52 percent increase in HIV diag- nosis’ for the same age group between 2000 and 2009.


The contest will award $2,000 each to three grand prize winners -- Art, Video/Photography or Essay/Poetry categories. The school and teacher of the grand prize winners will each receive $500. Three second-place winners will receive $1,500, along with $250 to their teach- ers.
