Upleatham Street School

The original school was built under the auspices of the British School Society on land donated by the Earl of Zetland at a cost of £1,442 2s 8d. The cost of building was supported by the Pease family and the Board of Education. The school opened on 26th July 1869 and the

master was a Mr Benoni Pearson and there were 106 scholars at the school. In 1886 the school was enlarged and heating

apparatus provided throughout the premises. It is interesting to note that the Committee of Management had difficulty in paying for the coal to keep two coal fires going in winter and a levy of 1d was placed on every pint of beer sold in the Zetland and Alexandra Hotels; this levy kept the school warm for a number of winters. The school was transferred to the North Riding

County Council in 1905. Bomb damage on 5th/6th May 1941 during the

second world war caused disruption to education but repairs were carried out and pupils continued to be educated on the site. The original school was eventually replaced by the present building which closed in July 2009. What does the future hold for this site? Thanks to George Medd for sharing information on

the school and to Christine Horrocks for the photograph of the original school.
