Tell us about Carol Shafer Fine Jewelry. I’m a personal, private jeweler. After graduating from the Gemological Institute of America, I knew exactly what direction I wanted to take for my business. Many of my clients include attorneys, doctors and executives who have little time in their busy lives and jobs to shop for fine jewelry (mostly gifts), so I go to them. Since I don’t maintain a typi- cal store and have minimal overhead, I’m able to pass on lower costs to my customers.

In working with a new client, I occasionally send pictures of items from my manufacturers or just of- fer suggestions while working within their budget. If they need a custom item made, no problem. I work closely with the most fabulous and talented bench jewelers I’ve ever encountered. I meet with my clients personally, deliver the item to them and gift wrap “on the spot”. I also maintain “wish lists,” making it easy for the gift giver to know exactly what to purchase for their significant other when the occasion arises. I also go the extra mile to remind clients by email or phone of upcoming per- sonal events such as anniversaries and birthdays. “In the doghouse” presents are especially interest- ing and add a final “I’m sorry” to the situation.
