Oncology Program recognizes that physical and emotional well-being can enhance the body’s ability to fight disease and recover health. As such, Sylvester provides patients with a comprehensive supportive oncology program designed to improve well-being and quality of life. A variety of services are coordinated to help patients and their families cope with cancer and achieve a healthy physical, emotional, social and spiritual state. The program’s key components of mind-body healing include psychosocial oncology, integrative medicine, palliative care, pain management and cancer rehabili- tation. Services offered include individual and family counseling, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, exercise/physical activity, herbal medicine consultation and relaxation. DR. GOODWIN RECEIVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce honored W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., chief medical officer of Sylvester/UMHC and professor of otolaryngology, with the AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Goodwin was recognized for making a significant contribution to the health and well-being of the community. As cancer center director from 1996 to 2010, he built Sylvester into a world-class institution known for research and clinical breakthroughs.


SYLVESTER SURGEONS PERFORM FIRST REMOVAL OF THROAT CANCER IN SOUTH FLORIDA USING SURGICAL ROBOT Francisco Civantos, M.D., associate professor of otolaryngology, and Giovana Thomas, M.D, associate professor of otolaryngology, performed the first removal of throat cancer in South Florida using the da Vinci® Surgical System. The minimally-invasive endoscopic procedure was performed at the University of Miami Hospital in collaboration with urologic robotic surgeon Raymond J. Leveillee, M.D., professor of urology. The da Vinci enables surgeons to reach the base of the tongue, tonsils, and throat without external incisions, offering faster recovery time and reduced risk of complications.
