message from the board chair
It’s an exciting time to be a part of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Next year
will mark Sylvester’s 20th anniversary. In this time, Sylvester has united an impressive number of world-class cancer specialists and community leaders with the single focus of reducing the human burden from cancer while steadfastly seeking a cure.
Since 1992, Sylvester has experienced unprecedented growth, and much like the people who practice and train here, the cancer center is vibrant, energetic, and continues to develop, grow, and thrive.
As the first chair of Sylvester’s Board of Governors who is also a patient and cancer survivor, I have experienced this formidable cancer center first hand.
Joan Scheiner
When I was diagnosed with a rare soft tissue sarcoma more than 14 years ago, my prognosis was grim; it seemed I had only months to live. Thanks to my doctor and his team, I am here, able to share my story with other patients and give back to the place that saved my life.
Sylvester focuses on the whole human being—body, mind, and spirit. As a patient, the integrative medicine approach helped me find the strength to fight and cope with cancer. Sylvester helped me find the best in myself at the worst of times.
My mission now is to ensure everyone who needs the services of a world-class cancer center will find it when they step inside Sylvester—not only the latest technology, medicine, and science, but the most compassionate and dedicated care.
Sylvester has come a long way in a short time, but we have much to do. Right now, you have an opportunity to help shape the future of our cancer center. For anyone who likes to build, this is the place to be. Our researchers can’t continue their search for a cancer cure without the generous support of our donors, friends, and volunteers; every contribution makes a difference. Sylvester has had my life in its hands, and as chair, I feel I have the life of the center in my hands. It is my privilege to guide the center along this amazing journey, and I hope you’ll join us.
