$1.5 Million for Cancer Research
The Metropolitan Garden Gala drew a crowd of more than 870 community supporters all rallying for one cause—
to aid Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers in treating and finding a cure for cancer.
The biennial gala was a festive affair celebrated at Miami’s newest world-class hotel: JW Marriott Marquis and Hotel Beaux Arts, which were also the gala’s corporate host and sponsor. It was an evening of high style, fine food, and entertainment by Tony-Award winning singer/actress Idina Menzel and featured a luxury silent auction and the presentation of the Caroline Halpern Award for outstanding philanthropic leadership to Roberta and Harvey Chaplin. But the reason for the event was not lost on anyone. Sylvester leaders and researchers drew attention to Sylvester’s ongoing quest for a cancer cure and highlighted successes that have saved countless lives – all made possible by the support of those in attendance. Sylvester Interim Director Joseph Rosenblatt, M.D., told the crowd about SGN-35, a drug first developed at Sylvester to treat lymphomas that has saved the life of an Argentinean father of two. The drug recently has been approved by the Food & Drug Administration. “We are all here because we care so much about the work being done
at Sylvester,” said Miller School Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D. “Their diligence and your support will allow us one day to say ‘cancer is cured.’”
