GENETIC DIFFERENCES FOUND IN BREAST TISSUES AMONG RACES

Results from a pilot study by Sylvester scientists suggest underlying genetic differences among ethnic groups are present in normal breast tissue as well as in tumors. These findings may partially explain why women of certain ethnic backgrounds face a higher risk for certain breast cancers than others.

Lisa Baumbach, Ph.D., associate research professor of neurology, and Mark Pegram, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Clinical and Translational Research Program at the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute, led the study. They found statistically significant differences in a subset of genes among three different ethnic groups: African Americans, Hispanics and non-Hispanic Whites.

BLOOD FILTER MAY DETECT CANCER METASTASIS Doctors and researchers at the Miller School of Medicine have devised a novel blood filter that may detect if cancer has spread or metastasized in patients. A group of scientists and physicians, led by Richard J. Cote, M.D., professor and chair of pathology, has developed a filter-based microdevice that detects and characterizes circulating tumor cells, which may transform the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. The device also may help indicate a treatment’s effectiveness sooner than has been possible in the past.

SYLVESTER’S PEER-REVIEWED FUNDING GROWS SIGNIFICANTLY Sylvester has increased its peer-reviewed and NCI funding portfolio significantly at a time when national funding cutoffs have been at their lowest, in a very competitive funding environment. This increase in funding reflects the high caliber of accomplishments at Sylvester, the addition of outstanding faculty and the dedication and productivity of its scientists.
