Dr. Krishna Komanduri talks with a patient in the new inpatient stem cell transplant unit.

Comprehensive Treatment Center Opens for Stem Cell Transplant Patients

The unique needs of adult stem cell transplant patients treated for various types of cancer and hematological diseases, including

leukemia, Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, are met by Sylvester’s Adult Stem Cell Transplant Program. Led by Krishna Komanduri, M.D., Kalish Family Chair in Stem Cell

Transplantation and professor of medicine, microbiology and immunology, the program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). It’s the most advanced program in South Florida providing autologous (from patient) and allogeneic (from donor) stem cell transplants.

Adult patients are treated in a new unit, with 10 specialized transplant beds, including four intensive care unit beds. Named for Fred Havenick, the ICU was made possible by his wife, Barbara Havenick, a Sylvester Board of Governors member and UM Trustee, and their family and friends.

Sylvester is building “Alex’s Place” to care for children with cancer, thanks to the generosity of businessman, engineer, and philanthro- pist, Alexander Daly. The first pediatric oncology clinic on the Miller School of Medicine campus is under construction in the courtyard at Sylvester and will provide children with the highest quality care in a comfortable, child-friendly environment. Daly, a University of Miami alumnus, donated $2 million to build the 3,000 square foot Alexander Daly Family Clinic for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Slated to open in early 2012, the multidisciplinary clinic will accommodate nearly all outpatient services under one roof, and will provide areas for infusions and transfusions that are both private and age appropriate. Daly’s gift also will enable Sylvester to develop more pediatric cancer therapies and clinical trials.
