Make it a Sussex Local Christmas Dinner by David Horwood, Village Larder

Last year I brought my Ham from a local butcher, r e - a s s u r ed that it was S u s s e x reared. I was disappointed to find an Irish mark on the

rind, which took the glaze off of the thought of having local produce for our Christmas dinner.

Twelve months on, having started Village Larder in Washington with my wife Liz, we now have the onerous task of sourcing as much local produce as possible to give our customers a Sussex Christmas at an affordable price. We wanted to give people the choice to have their complete Christmas Dinner sourced within Sussex.

was unaware that Christmas was just around the corner when we visited in November. Glynn Thomas is a 3rd generation Turkey farmer and continues with a traditional method of rearing and processing the birds, which are hand plucked and then hung to develop a richer, fuller flavour.

Derek and Vicky Crush of Daylands Farm in Ashurst are a key supplier of vegetables to Village Larder, along with the ‘Growing Together’ charity at Rock Farm, Washington.

We’ve even managed to offer a Sussex cheeseboard complimented by a Christmas chutney produced in the village by Sarah and Jason of Loft Pickles & Jams.

We know that we’ll not be able to source all ingredients of a Christmas dinner from Sussex, Chestnuts and Cranberries have us stumped, but we visit Brighton’s Fruit and Veg market for produce that is not available locally which keeps food miles down.

So if you want to make it a real Sussex Local Christmas dinner, then visit Village Larder at Squires Garden Centre along the A24 just north from the Washington roundabout or visit to place your order.
