Don banked the goodwill and camaraderie of his own mates and of most every local adolescent of that era, who are now, of course, all middle aged. They will most llikely fondly remember the Disco in the Guide Hall when Don and the Guide and Scout Committees managed the frivolity and antics with god humour and tact, all having had a thoroughly good night out. A trip to the local supermarket, is all it takes for a few hours in the day to disappear.

There are hot topics to debate and a little reminiscing with practically everybody Don bumps into before he gets back to sort out some lunch. Summer comes and so too does the knocking of ebony bowls over flat greens and the calm of the evning songbirds, the whispers and the soft sharp disappointed drawers of breath. This is Don’s other life at the Bowls club.

As the evening of his own life draws in I could only notice a persistent determination in Don to embrace the changes in his circumstances and those of his local community and meet the demands that are required to manage the challenges that come with them.

Not that he is on some lonely crusade. Don’s daughter Hilary has Don host her for dinner most Saturday evenings and she, along with her brother

Jonathan and his family, keep turning up for this or that. All to be expected of, a warm and loving parent and an obliging Grandfather.

The list of initiatives determined and successfully implemented, most of which have been maintained to this day, is extraordinary and too long a list to reiterate. Suffice it to say that his banking expertise and fiscal experience has impacted on decisions being made that have without doubt added a huge value to the civic portfolio of our community in Storrington and the surrounding parishes.
