CUEAFS awarded with Cecil Angel Cup
By Antoniya Petkova
Earlier this week, CUEAFS
was awarded with the Cecil Angel Cup - the most prestigious prize at Coventry University. The award, which is given every year to staff and students for ‘significant contribution to the development of the institution and significant enhancement of its reputation’, was officially presented at this year’s graduation ceremony on 21 November 2011. Diana Stefanescu, first
president of the society and one of the two students behind the nomination proposal, said it was a privilede for her to receive the award.
“It’s very rewarding for
all the members to see that all their hard work recognised with such a prestigious cup”, Diana said, “and it will definitely push everyone to work even harder in order to receive it next year as well.”
Since its foundation
in 2009, the society has had amazing achievements, such as distributor sponsorships and donations, visits from directors, sponsored international trips for staff and students, reviews published on professional
platforms and the first East Asian film festival and symposium in the Midlands. “Yet another fantastic
achievement for CUEAFS”, current President Andreea Dascalu said. “It is our strong desire to continue along the same lines in the future and keep raising awareness of East Asian cinema”.
Shaun Hides, Head of
the Media and Communications department in the university, has always been very supportive of the society’s activities and was happy to be able to back the society’s nomination for the Cecil Angel Cup. “It’s brilliant that they
have won”, he commented. “Since its beginning, all the students and staff involved - of course especially Spencer Murphy - have shown great commitment and passion for it. CUEAFS is an expression of how great it can be to be part of something imaginative and innovative as a student here”.
The
personal and professional achievements of both the
members and founder Spencer Murphy were recognised at the Coventry University Students Union ceremony of 2011, when they received the award for Best Society.
Spencer, who has been
the driving force behind the society’s development, said it has been a pleasure to work alongside the members on all of the society’s projects. “To gain such a
prestigous recognition from the University is just the icing on the cake”, he added. “Winning this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all members of CUEAFS and their commitment to raising awareness of East Asian Film and Culture throughout the University. We have set ourselves very high standards, and I’m sure this will spur on everyone to continue doing great work.”
