Gavin’s own perseverance and triumph in reaching the top of the world, after five earlier attempts, reflects the work Rotary does in the developing world to make dreams come true for people whose simple ambitions are clean water and education.

Rotary on top of the world

Irish Rotarian, Gavin Bate, created a rare moment in history when he scaled Mount Everest and unfurled a Rotary flag on the summit.

N

ow you have a unique opportunity to share in that moment as the very same Rotary flag goes up for

auction on eBay in December, in support of The Rotary Foundation. There will only ever be one flag like this and one opportunity to bid for it. How did the Rotary flag get there?

Rotary International in Ireland, and Coleraine Rotary Club in particular, were proud to hear mountaineer Gavin address the Rotary District 1160 Conference in County Cavan in 2010 and his promise to put Rotary on top of the world in his next attempt on Mount Everest. He was as good as his word. When he returned to present the flag to the then District Governor Wes Armstrong, at his home club in Coleraine,

Gavin recognised the extra impetus which his promise to Rotary had given to his success in conquering Everest at last. Visit www.myeverestchallenge.com

and follow Gavin on his ascent from base camp, via the South Col, to the summit of Mount Everest on 20 May 2011 and see the Rotary Wheel where it has rarely been before. Compare the colours of the Rotary

wheel at base camp and on the summit and see the yellow surround of the iconic wheel become a faded pink following the intense UV exposure on Everest. Originally designed to symbolise

movement and civilisation, the Rotary Wheel takes on a new dimension on Everest. Gavin’s own perseverance and

triumph in reaching the top of the world, after five earlier attempts, reflects the work Rotary does in the developing world to make dreams come true for people whose simple ambitions are clean water and education. The auction will also support Gavin’s own charity, Moving Mountains, which funds projects in Nepal, East Africa and Borneo www.movingmountainstrust.com There is no copy of this flag. There is

only the one and it is a unique part of Rotary International memorabilia. The Everest Flag, signed by Gavin, will

be auctioned on eBay during December 2011. We ask Rotarians, philanthropists, Rotary clubs and individuals to be sure to follow the bidding and make your offer. Remember, you can own this truly rare piece of history, for yourself or your organisation. For more information, log on to www.colerainerotary.org n
