Martin Shaw and Viva! lead dairy boycott to save badgers
At the time of going to press, the fate of both English and Welsh badgers lies in the balance – with both under threat of imminent slaughter. Whilst there has been much political lobbying (plenty
of it organised by Viva!), it is now time to look at the real reason why the humble badger is under attack. It’s time to dump dairy. Actor and Viva! patron, Martin Shaw, agrees with us:
“I support any move to show that badgers have been unfairly scapegoated by the Government and the dairy industry. That is why I support Viva!’s call to boycott English dairy products. By pointing the finger of blame at wildlife, farmers and politicians are attempting to sidestep a mess of their own making – namely a highly

intensified dairy industry, scandalously bad testing regimes, fraud and mass cattle movements across the country. We mustn’t forget that these are the real reasons for the TB crisis, yet the humble badger will soon be in the crosshairs; a victim of political backslapping and unfounded hysteria – and that is nothing short of a scandal.” Join the dairy boycott! Foston Pig Prison Update
The long saga of Midland Pig Producers plans to build their massive 26,000 pig farm is still on-going. The council are still looking at the plans and decision making has been pushed back, until the end of the year or even 2012. In the meantime, opposition is still growing. On August 13 Viva! took part in a march organised by Derby Animal Rights in opposition to the proposed pig prison, which over 100 people attended. Viva! Campaigner Kat Affleck was one of the speakers, giving talks before the rally moved through the city, calling on people to say no to the plans and giving out leaflets to members of the public. There were also a number of stalls providing information and vegan food. The event attracted media coverage, including East Midlands TV News, The BBC, Farmers Weeklyand Farmers Guardian.
