BEST BET: Christian

YOU CAN’T BROWSE THROUGH radio stations around these blessed pastures without pausing for a second to hear some throaty rock chorus signing the Lord’s praises. It’s a wonder to think the “infernal racket” of rock ‘n’ roll, that for a time, had pastors and neighborhood watch committees worried about their daughters’ virginities is now used to bring Christian values to fans of the WWF and UFC. It seems to be just another one of those things happening in the ‘90s that distracted everyone from what was happening in Kosovo. Christian rock is often bashed for its underlying endgame, which is simply spreading religious doctrine – but usually because it sounds uniformly awful and pre-packaged. Still, if it weren’t for the gospel, America’s favorite badass and most redeemable drug addict Johnny Cash would have never found his voice. And if that were the case, fate would have never allowed Jars of Clay to win three Grammys or lead them to the Community Reformed Christian Church in Zeeland on Dec. 11 for the Acoustic Christmas Tour.
