REVUEWM.COM | DECEMBER 2011 | 69 BEST BET: Rock

IF SANTA SHREDDED ON HIS ELECTRIC guitar while his dexterous little elves wailed on keyboards, drum kits and violins, it might sound something like Trans- Siberian Orchestra. The holiday themed progressive rock band has been touring the U.S. each winter since 1999, selling more than seven million tickets and putting on a visual display of fire, lasers and dangerously awesome explosions. The brainchild of do-everything musician Paul O’Neill, TSO formed in 1993 composed largely of members from Savatage, the heavy metal band that O’Neill managed. He envisioned mixing the rock opera parts of The Who, the laser-light shows of Pink Floyd and the juxtaposition of classical and rock music of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The musical concoction allowed listeners to view Christmas songs from a new perspective – one that fills you with holiday cheer and then rocks your ears with a squealing guitar solo. Stand-out tracks like “Christmas Canon Rock” and “A Mad Russian’s Christmas” have helped the band become one of the 25 Best Touring Artists of the 2000s, according to Billboard magazine.
