OVER THE RHINE wsg The Milk Carton Kids Covenant Fine Arts Center, Grand Rapids Dec. 9, 8 p..m $20, $10 with Calvin ID calvin.edu/sao, (616) 526-6064

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH the historic neighbor- hood in Cincinnati that served as its incubation chamber, Over the Rhine’s husband-wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist have been around the music producing scene a time or two in the past 20-odd years. Their most recent album, The Long Surrender, continues in their tradition of layered, sparse instrumentation accompanying Bergquist’s silky voice in some of the most thoughtful ballads to grace this writer’s ears in years. With fellow duo Milk

Carton Kids, Over the Rhine is swinging through the Covenant Fine Arts Center at Calvin College on their way over to the windy city. Unabashed as a child’s hand in a cookie jar, Over the Rhine doesn’t muck around down with so-called ‘pop hits’ but prefers to stick to writing high-quality music that really matters, confident that discerning audiences will recognize where it’s at. Not over-produced or over- orchestrated, Over the Rhine slowly builds its music in a manner reminiscent of Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ until the listener is sucked soul-first into a cloud of audio beatification. There are definitely worse ways to go. Reported by Carl Dunker
