Fruit” and “You’ve Changed” to the unforgettable “Lover Man” and “Good Morning, Heartache,” so that Billie is remarkably present in spirit.

Reviewers have likened the exchange between Bridgewater and her sax player James Carter as akin to that between Billie Holiday and the great Lester “Prez” Young.

Given the nature of Holiday and Young’s tremendous partnership alone, this show is a must. But Bridgewater also brings her incomparable vocal skill and presence to a female jazz artist with whom she identifies and one she deeply loves.

Bridgewater had her first big breakthrough in the 1970s performing with the famed Thad

Jones-Mel Lewis big band at the Village Vanguard. She had the opportunity to play with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Max Roach, among many others.

Bridgewater has had a diverse career that has seen her performing in a wide range of venues around the world to rave reviews.

Although Billie Holiday lived a tragic life, when Dee Dee Bridgewater brings her tribute to the stage, we will bear witness to the true strength and artistry of Lady Day’s life and work as portrayed by one of the most talented jazz vocalists, actors and entertainers with extraordinary range and versatility.

Jazz is flexible and malleable enough to encompass vast portions of human experience.

From the Deep South to New Orleans to Chicago to New York City and the West Coast, the American influence on jazz has been indelible. The Canadian jazz scene has been vibrant for a long time as well and is clearly more and more influential on the world stage.

At the Centre for the Arts this season, we are offered an extraordinary range of performing styles and genres as the world class vocalists and instrumentalists who are coming to our stage put St. Catharines on the map of the jazz music world.
