Construction at the corner of St. Paul and Carlisle streets is expected to be completed by late 2014. VISIONS OF THE ROAD AHEAD

Ground has yet to be broken for the Performing Arts Centre, but already the cornerstone of downtown revitalization has built a following.

The City of St. Catharines is using Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to keep people in the loop of all things arts-centre related. The accounts are updated regularly by executive director Steve Solski and staff in the City’s communications department.

“Social media is another avenue for residents to get in touch with us at the City about this project and to build that sentiment that this arts centre is for the people of St. Catharines and Niagara,” Solski said.

Detailed designs were revealed at an event on site in September. Using social media, including live blogging from the event and posting the designs to Facebook and Twitter, the City made it easy for residents who couldn’t be downtown to still feel part of the action.

A video of the design unveiling was also posted to the City’s YouTube channel, showing the highlights and providing a quick recap of the milestone.

But more than a one-way feed of information from the City, Solski wants to engage with people online.

Many residents provided feedback about the detailed designs, which was incorporated into the final tweaking of the designs. As project developments happen, the hope is to continue using social media to keep dialogue going.

An online animated video gives viewers a sense of what it will be like to sit in the concert hall or people watch from the lobby balcony. The video covers all vantage points and shows alterations made to the design since September.
