what they buy. People are making not just an aesthetic decision, but also a moral choice as to buy products that are made ensuring the environment is not exploited.

Schaer Holzbau’s sees itself as a high end specialised company that builds natural homes and furnishings based on ecological, economic and social principles. An independent architect says: "When I deal with Schaer Holzbau I know I can use natural, local materials to achieve a modern architectural look using advanced manufacturing technology." That’s why Walter sees himself as a translator of architecture.

The reason that Schaer Holzbau is unique is that the client can follow the entire manufacturing and building process, from growing the tree to working on the spacial dimensions of the construction to ensure maximum comfort.

"We attract people who have high expectations of comfort and who want to deal consciously with the environment and its limited resources." Walter

The wood comes from the local region and the clients know where their trees are raised. Clients can talk with the ranger, who maintains the forest and who strikes the wood. The trees are taken from a renewable tree plantation.

They produce, assemble and put together all the elements of an entire house in the factory in Altbüron. There is an omnipresence of the smell the freshly cut wood. Modern technology guarantees the highest quality in finishing standards. Even the manufacturing process has been designed so as to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, the factory is powered with solar energy. Today they can produce and assemble a whole building on site including the facade and the interior. Clay is another natural element used in the construction and is used as a climate regulator to achieve the Swiss zero-energy standard called “Minergie”.
