Around 600 people gathered around the War Memorial and lined up along the bridge for Looe’s Remembrance Day service, when 54 wreaths were laid.

A blooming good effort

First Looe Sea Scouts have been helping the Looe in Bloom organisers clear old flowerbeds and weed plants at Hannafore.

Group leader Vicky Richardson said the eight children who took part received their community badges for their help on the day.

‘We cleared beds of old flowers, and weeded annuals and shrubs, ready for planting for the next burst of colour,’ she said.

Among those gathered to remember the fallen were the family of Paul Upton who lost his life while on service in Afghanistan on February 25, 2009. The town council have had his name inscribed on the War Memorial.

The procession from the Rose Garden in Fore Street was led by the standard bearers of the Looe branch of the RBL together with mayor and mayoress David and

Annette Bryan, town councillors, mace bearers Liz Rose and Sarah Merrin, and town sergeant Chris Rose. Many local organisations also took part in the parade.

The Exhortation and Kohima Epigram were read by the president and chairman of Looe RBL, Louis Portman, and the service was led by the new rector of St Martin’s, the Rev Philip Sharp. Hymns were sung to the accompaniment of St Pinnock Silver Band.

Encore! Encore!

Looe’s very own dance troupe Encore is proving a hit among the youth of the town as they go from strength to strength.

In 2010, Encore got through to the ‘Global Breakin Convention Tour’ in Truro plus they also auditioned for Sky TVs hit show ‘Got to Dance,’ where they performed in front of Adam Garcia, Kimberly Wyatt and Banjo of Diversity.

They received two gold stars and one red, which allowed them to progress through to the short list for the live show. Unfortunately Encore didn’t make the top 30.

So far during 2011, Encore has competed in the UDO Street Dance Championships in Newport.

For junior performers Indigo Taylor,Amy Marshall, Abbie and Imogen Thomas, Riley Griffiths and Maddie Dunn this event was their first taste of competitive dancing and they performed admirably.

Encore’s Sarah Stacey, Mollie Griffiths, Tom Dunn, Amy Thomas, Faye Dan, Bobbie-lea Thomlinson

and Maisie Rowe - minus Lucy Rigler, also competed in the under 18s intermediate group at the same event. Unfortunately neither teams were placed out of the 36 teams competing.

Tom Dunn was placed fifth in the over 16s group with his solo out of 40+ dancers. Faye Dan made the semi-finals in the over 16s while Maisie Griffiths reached the semi-finals of the under 14s.

Abbie Thomas and Maddie Dunn made the quarter-finals in both their solos in the under 12s and finally Tom Dunn and Faye Dan made the semi-finals for their doubles in the Over 16s category.

Encore also had the privilege of performing in this year’s hugely successful Looe Music Festival and attracted a great deal of interest from the large crowds in attendance.

Recently, Encore travelled up to Cardiff and had an audition for the forthcoming ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. The dance troupe ‘smashed’ their audition and are now nervously waiting to hear from the show’s producers to see if they have made it through to the judges panel.

Encore has started a mini Encore group. There are currently 23 young children ranging from five up to 13 years of age and they train once a week.

They have all been individually chosen for their talent and personality and in the near future will also be competing alongside Encore Juniors and Encore.

Encore was primarily set up so that the kids of Looe could express themselves through a creative form and be given the opportunity to channel their energy productively. The aim of the dance troupe is to build individual confidence and teach the students to a high level.

Mollie Griffiths has had such a positive response to Encore and its style of dancing that she now runs hip hop classes at Looe Community School on Wednesday’s with classes for 4-7 year olds, 4pm-4.45pm and 8-11 year olds at 5pm-6pm; Tom Dunn also runs a boys class (any age) 5pm- 6pm. All these classes are fun, energetic and only £2.50! For further information please contact Mollie on 07814 133829 or Tom on 07526 530915.

Encore has no financial help or support, they hold workshops and fund themselves within the group.

Encore are available to perform at private functions and promotional events - if interested please contact Mollie Griffiths.
