November 18, 2011 at his home. Bill was born and educated in Ohio and

Joseph F. Conway Joseph F. Conway, 80, of Atkinson, died on

November 17, 201,1 at Community Hospice in Merrimack.

Born on September 16, 1931, in Melrose, MA. He was born and attended school during the Great Depression. He was well prepared for his involvement in a garage/gas station ownership that brought many responsibilities at a young age. The long hours of work convinced him to go back to school and he, his mother,

and sister went up to New Hampshire for a different way of life that was enjoyed by all. As this new world opened, the excitement was ongoing. A 600 pound black bear walking down the trail to his home, a hot air balloon forced down on their well manicured three acre lawn on a hill overlooking the lake where the speed boat was moored, learning to fly, operating a steam locomotive onto a turn table to turn around, is a long list of events that occurred and were talked about during break time. His involvement into the food business started in Lawrence, MA, at the Lawrence General Hospital where he enjoyed employment as the food service manager as a trainee. He had a room at the hospital, paying $3 weekly and drove home to New Hampshire on the weekends. This employment led to the Sturdee Memorial Hospital, in Attleboro, MA, where he continued a leadership role. He regretted this move to Attleboro for he was far removed from New Hampshire. Leaving this grand opportunity, he started to build a reputation in food preparation that preceded him throughout the United States. From Joe’s Restaurant in Salem, to Howard Freedman, Red Tavern in Methuen, MA, he was involved with the most successful businessmen of the world.

Upon his retirement, his participating in many ongoing volunteer groups brought him praise and complementary newspaper articles for he recognized the needs of those less fortunate than him. The legacy of the Irish Immigrants, his mother and father had continued on with his marriage and a gift from heaven with the birth of twin daughters who are having very successful careers and wonderful families of their own. God Bless them all Joseph’s family members include his daughters, Carol Berube, Pamela and her husband John McMillan, and Patricia and her husband Eric Lamb; and his grandchildren, Catherine, Nathaniel, Ryan, Cara, Drew, Nick, Brody, Paddy and Shannon. graduated from Washington High School and he received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University. He retired from Raytheon where he was Director of Export, Licensing and Control. Bill was a member of ODK, the National

Leadership Honor Society, and other associations in college. He was a member of the American Management Association, the International City Management Association, the NH Municipal Association, and the Aerospace Industries Association. He was a Past President and board member of Salemhaven and he was previously a member of the Planning Board and Budget Committee of both Salem and Hampstead. He served as Salem’s Town Manager from 1971-1978. He previously worked in public service for the City of Painesville, OH. He was on the Board of Trustees for the First Congregational Church in both Salem and Hampstead. Bill’s passions were his family, public service, and his church. Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia Kelly of Hampstead; his sons,

W. Robert Kelly and his wife Karen of Exeter, and Charles Kelly and his wife Trish of Naperville, IL; his daughter, Enid Kelly and her husband Adrian Read of Kingston-Upon-Thames, England; a sister, Lois Jean Levers of Clinton, OH; and four grandchildren, Shalagh, Ryan and his wife Lauren, Devin and Katie.
