CARGO HANDLING NEWS New Sennebogen in Shoreham

The Port of Shoreham, on the south coast of England, recently acquired the first Sennebogen 880 M mobile harbour crane, touted as the biggest mobile hydraulic handler in the world. The machine, representing an invest-

ment of around €1.5M, has a 26m outreach and a maximum payload of 30t. Self-weight is 181t, including 70t for the undercarriage and running gear, which is based on the existing Sennebogen 6180 lattice boom rope hoist mobile harbour crane. The crane is fitted with a spacious and

comfortable operator’s cabin that provides an excellent view over the quay and hold. All controls are ergonomically arranged and assisted by computer-controlled man- agement systems. The crane was acquired to support a new steel pilings contract won by the port

Navis scales up to meet demand

Navis has announced a significant increase “in resources and new talent to meet the increasing demand from customers and the evolving requirements of the industry.” Navis has also been more aggressive in seek- ing more business and has added four new customers in Latin America this year. Additional customer support staff have been added in Europe, the Americas, India and Asia. Navis has also expanded its pro- fessional services and product development staff as it seeks to meet the twin challenges of more automated terminals and migrat- ing its existing customer base to the SPARCS N4 TOS. Many terminals mi- grating to SPARCS N4 review their whole IT strategy and this is significantly more demanding than a standard TOS upgrade. A significant part of Navis’s R&D ef-

fort is going into automated terminal soft- ware. “According to an internal research report on terminal operation opportuni- ties conducted by Moffat and Nichol ear- lier this year, the trend towards automa- tion in the industry is accelerating and we are seeing this in our customer and prospect base with an estimated 15 ter- minal facilities planning to use automated equipment by 2015 and three major ter- minal projects planned by 2020,” said Bill Walsh, president and CEO of Navis, LLC. Automated terminals are also a key part

of Cargotec’s strategy and it has stated that owning Navis enables it to offer a com- plete equipment/software solution. Alhough not announced, it is thought that Trapac,Inc in the US will use Navis soft- ware (it currently has an in-house TOS and GPS-based PDS system) and, possibly, fleet management software co-developed by Cargotec and Navis to manage its ASCs and automated shuttle carriers.

Grain loader for Dunkirk

The Port of Dunkirk has acquired a sec- ond-hand grain shiploader/unloader from the Port of Le Havre. The 35m tall ma- chine, built by Joseph Paris SA (Groupe Favat), was loaded by SAL’s heavy lift ship LONE in Le Havre and delivered to Dun- kirk’s Grande Synthe facility, where the grain terminal is operated by Barra-SNM Nord Céréales (part of Sogema group). The grain loader was previously in- stalled at the Joannes Couvert quay in Le Havre, but has been unused since 2003. The loading and discharge were carried out in a tandem lift by LONE’s 2 x 1000t NMF cranes.

Dunkirk is both an import and ex-

port port for various grains. Up to the end of October, grain throughput had increased 48% year-on-year to 1.68 Mt. The port wants to develop more traffic with the regions of Nord-Pas de Calais, Picardy and Champagne-Ardennes.

from Areclor Mittal, but it is fitted with a quick coupling, multi-tool system and the range of attachments includes a 6.8 m3 clamshell grab, 20t hook, 30t hook, a semi- automatic timber spreader and a 15t spreader beam. In addition, it can be fitted with a new design of 10 m3

biomass spreader that was

recently delivered to the port by EH Hassell & Sons, the exclusive sales and service partner for both the grab maker and Sennebogen in the British Isles. The 880 M is the third Sennebogen

mobile hydraulic materials handler sup- plied to Shoreham. The port also oper- ates two 870 Ms and a large, crawler-

mounted Sennebogen 880 EQ (balance crane). This crane has a maximum capac- ity of 35t and a reach of 24m. Speaking of the new 880 M, Alan Motterham the port’s director of opera- tions, said: “Sennebogen tailored the prod- uct to our specific requirements. The proven low maintenance costs and posi- tive support from E H Hassell with the existing Sennebogen, equipment, now dating back more than six years, were also very important to us.”
