All Change at GCH Theme Day
Guest speaker Emmanuel Jal speaks to students during Theme Day
Theme day was introduced to Grey Coat eight years ago. Over that time there have been the following themes: Building a strong Community, Inspiration, Aim Higher, Respect, Wisdom, Identity, Freedom and Discovery. This year we felt the theme needed to reflect the recent change in the Senior Leadership Team, and the physical change we are enjoying with the addition of our new Arts building and BSF improvements.
The front of both buildings again this year reflected the creativity and talent of Mr Ward (Design & Technology). The entrance to the school was transformed into a Dr Who styled tardis, which drew the attention of tourists and passers-by throughout the day.
Our guest speaker this year was Emmanuel Jal, a cast member of the film ‘Africa United’. He was accompanied by Rhiddan Brook, the screenwriter of the film who regularly speaks on Radio 4’s Thought for The Day and has in past years been a guest speaker on pastoral day.
Emmanuel Jal, who is both an actor and singer, spoke of his harrowing life as a child solider, recruited to fight at the age of 7 by the SLPA in Sudan, before being rescued as a refugee by an Aid worker Emma McCune who saved his life and adopted him as her son. His talk covered his life journey from death and destruction to his new role as an advocate for peace. Emmanuel is a spokesperson for a
number of movements including Make Poverty History, the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers and the Control Arms campaign.
All pupils shared in collective worship and throughout the day participated in a range of exciting physical workshops and activities.
Theme day continues to be a wonderful day which celebrates the creativity and spirit of the Grey Coat community.
