Grey Coat 10

Library news Pupil Librarians

This is a new initiative for the Grey Coat Library – we have appointed 4 girls from year 9 and 2 from year 8 to work in the Library at break and lunch times. The standard of the applications was really excellent, and we were very impressed at the maturity the girls showed in the interviews.

The Pupil Librarians will follow a structured training programme, and I will award certificates as they pass each stage. Well done to the new PLs!

Booked Up

The Booked Up scheme gives a free book to every child in year 7! We had fun in library lessons at the start of term, introducing the scheme and letting the girls see the titles on offer so that they could choose their book. I’m looking forward to giving out the books - they’ll arrive before the end of term.

Reading clubs

Two clubs are running in the Lower School Library this term:

Year 7 after school on Wednesdays – run by Ms Warder and Mrs Swan Year 8 and 9 on Wednesday lunchtimes – run by Ms Bond and Mrs Swan

Issue 16: October 2011 GCH world record holders!

On Thursday 13th October, the 6 Pupil Librarians and Mrs Swan went to Waterstone’s Bookshop in Piccadilly to take part in an attempt to break the World Record for the largest number of people in a Reading Relay.

This was to launch the first ever Read for RNIB Day on Friday 14th October. We arrived soon after 9.30 and waited with 300+ other participants to receive our order number and the line we were to read. The book chosen was a new title by Anthony Horowitz – The Double Eagle Has Landed. The attempt was scheduled to begin at 11am, so we had quite a long wait...

As the hour approached we became more and more excited, and at last we were off! As people began to read the line moved fast and although our numbers were 125-131 it was very soon our turn to read. Anjum got a laugh with her enthusiastically enunciated “Good!”!

We had a lovely time, enjoying each other’s company and the excitement of being involved in something big, and we finished off the morning with a well-earned cup of hot chocolate in the bookshop café.

Maths poetry competition

Aware that 6th October would be National Poetry Day, the Mathematics Department decided to encourage cross-curricular and creative activity by asking all students to produce a poem for a mathematics homework.

Year 7 Winner: Nina Nelson; Year 8 Winner: Rachel Moody; Year 9 Winner: Lucetta Adams; Year 10 Winner: Jenny Nguyen; Year 11 Winner: Anna Blacknell; Sixthform Winner: Elaheh Morteza.

Overall Winner: Molly Clark, Year 11.

Whilst all the above winning entries demonstrated thoughtful effort, there were also other poems from Years 7 and 10 which charmed or amazed the reader: We will be publishing them in the newsletter over the coming months. See overleaf for the overall winning entry from Molly Clark, Year 11.
