www.SanTanSun.com Teacher turns out big art

Architecture, teaching, politics and desert preservation are all accomplishments of Marge Nelssen on of this year’s Hidden in the Hills participants, but her greatest joy she affi rms “is creating art.”

Her love of making art began in elementary school which led to a major in architecture at ASU after which she and her husband built their own home in the Desert Foothills area of Scottsdale. “We raised a family and I became involved with my kids and their school,” Nelssen says. “I helped create the fi rst PTO in their district and was frequently in the classroom.” Exposure to her kid’s classroom resulted in Nelssen’s return to college for a teaching degree in art. Then in 2006 she stopped teaching public school in order to dedicate herself to creating her own art.

“I love working big,” Nelssen explains. “My Marg Nelssen

assemblage pieces are heavy, bulky and sharp. I keep promising myself that one day I’ll be disciplined to work smaller, lighter and less sharp!”

Her nontraditional mosaics are diverse and include everything from wall pieces and mirrors to boots and crosses. This year Nelssen introduces a series of small oil paintings inspired by a 2,700-mile solitary road trip she recently completed.

Nelssen was just appointed to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Committee and is a member of the Scottsdale Public Art Advisory Board. However, a brief stint in politics was Nelssen’s most challenging role. When her husband, Scottsdale City Councilmember Tony Nelssen, died, she felt it important to complete his term for the benefi t of his constituents.

“I served seven months in Tony’s seat,” she Photo collage at Vision Gallery

declares. “Now I know what he went through!” The Sonoran Arts League requires its members to donate a minimum of eight hours of service to the organization in order to participate in Hidden in the Hills.

The Library showcases many juried Sonoran Arts League artists and rotates pieces in conjunction with changing themes. Hidden in the Hills artists are featured through January 2012.

“Hidden in the Hills is by far the best tour of its kind,” Nelssen concludes. “It’s a long show lasting over two long weekends. But it really is worth all the work. People enjoy interacting with artists and seeing the studios. And best of all as artists we get valuable feedback from them.”
