Write on - The Payne Writing Club is participating in National Novel Writing Month this month. Each student set a goal for the number of words they would write during the month and posted it in the library. Students also received a lapel button and a bookmark. Their goal is to write a novel during the month. Pals - Panther Pals, a club that pairs special needs students with regular education students, hosted a mini- Thanksgiving, with turkey and all the trimmings this month, followed by good entertainment with “Cars 2.” Teachers Karen Smith and Miranda Thornton cooked turkeys, while the Panther Pals provided the rest of the meal. AAA - Chandler AAA Pride Award is given to persons who illustrate excellence in all they do. The AAA award winners are student Molly Ogden, volunteer Roberto Quezada and certified staff member Shannon Suiter. Feed the Famine – After seeing a piece on CNN Student News about the current famine in the Horn of Africa, eighth-graders Shayna Wright and Brenna Murphy were so moved they started looking for ways to get involved. After some research, the girls found “Feed The Famine,” a fundraising event last month in Phoenix to raise awareness and money for this famine. Along with students at Weinberg Elementary School, Shayna and Brenna helped organize a coin drive at both schools. At Payne, with the help of teacher Shannon Suiter, Shayna and Brenna

Car wash helps students - “Bear’s Cool Car Wash” is Basha High School’s Special Education Department’s real world vocational and work skills club that operates on the first and third Friday of each month. Teaching the students how to start and run their own businesses, the skills correlate with the Arizona’s Alternate Academic Standards Alternate Workplace Skills curriculum. Officers are self-contained special education students who wrote and gave a speech on why they should be elected to a specific office. Students wash and dry vehicles and collect donations from customers. Students then count the money, fill out appropriate forms,

Fieldtrip fun – The six kindergarten classes from CTA- Freedom recently visited Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek
on a fieldtrip. The children had a blast riding the roller coaster, swings, train and go-kart bikes, going down the big slide, playing in the corn mazes and watching pig races and BMX riders doing tricks. Each student was able to pick a pumpkin from the patch, which they used at school with their buddy classes to weigh, measure and count.
Kudos – Teachers at CTA-Freedom raised over $2,000 for United Way. Little patriots – CTA-Freedom third-graders recently performed a concert called “We Sing Songs of America.” The program was led by music specialist Mrs. Sejkora and showcased American folk songs and Native American music. —Lisa Shore
