Student art to benefit holiday fundraiser

Local art will be auctioned off at About Care’s fi rst holiday wine tasting and fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Thu., Dec. 8 at Vision Gallery studio, 10 E. Chicago St. in downtown Chandler. Students from the art departments at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Chandler and Hamilton high schools will donate their creations to the event, and Kokopelli Winery & Bistro will be catering. In addition, Burt Buxton, a disabled ex-police offi cer and Vietnam veteran, will speak about how About Care services have helped enhance his life. Cost is $25 per person and includes beverages and light hors d ‘oeuvres. About Care is a nonprofit organization serving Chandler and Gilbert. Its mission is to offer support services to the homebound elderly and disabled using trained volunteers. Most of the individuals served by About Care are widows of


former military, elderly, disabled and economically disadvantaged needing transportation for medical appointments.

Jewish congregation collects for holiday gifts


In December, a large group of women associated with Toys From The Heart, sponsored by the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation Sisterhood, will arrive at Frye Elementary School in Chandler, carrying sacks of wrapped toys for the youngest children.


Donations are currently being sought by the organization to help fund this year’s toy-giving spree, which includes purchasing and wrapping new toys for student recipients.


To make a donation, send a check payable to SLJC with “Toys From The Heart” in the memo section to: Attention Phyllis, 3495 E. County Down Rd., Chandler, AZ 85249.

ABTO members lay tracks for open house


Train enthusiasts in Chandler, Gilbert, Sun Lakes and across the East Valley and Phoenix-metro area will open their homes for the annual Christmas Open House Tours 2011 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 10, 11, 17 and 18. Fifteen homes will display elaborate G-scale garden railroads for public viewing in return for donations to support Arizona Big Trains activities including the maintenance of the train layouts at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Cardon Children’s Medical Center.


SanTan Sun area tour sites are at 739 E. Prescott Dr., 4141 W. Corona Dr. and 1236 S. Longmore Ct. in Chandler; 25025 S. Lakeway Dr. and 9636 E. Mossy Rock Dr. in Sun Lakes; 861 W. Emerald Island Dr. in Gilbert; and 1149 E. Saddleback Pl. in San Tan Valley.
