will enable us to develop better treatments.”

Dr. Dome’s interest in renal tumors began when he was a fellow at Johns Hopkins. “I fell in love with this patient population and the opportunity to take part in a rapidly evolving field. Making a difference in patient outcomes and research was very attractive to me. I had a couple of Wilms tumor patients who had recurrence, which made me consider the biology of the tumor and why some people are predisposed to recurrence and others are not.” This motivated Dr. Dome to do his fellowship lab project on biological prognostic factors for Wilms tumor, specifically, focusing on an enzyme called telomerase, which is linked to cancer cell immortality. High telomerase expression level in tumors was predictive of recurrence. Now, he hopes to learn whether telomerase can also be a target of novel therapies for Wilms tumor.

Wilmington Walk Brings Big Success for Small State

Delaware may be a small state, but its 2010 CureSearch Walk was a huge success!

The October 16, 2010, event at the Wilmington Riverfront raised $101,437, through the generosity and hard work of 19 teams made up of nearly 500 walkers. Participants came from beyond Delaware’s borders, traveling from Connecticut, Maryland,

New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia for the event.

The top team, Honoring Our Angels, Walking for Our Warriors, comprised of doctors and nurses from the Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital for children, raised $9,374 and has signed up to participate in the 2011 Walk. Special guests at the Walk included former Congressman Mike Castle (D-DE) and Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden (top photo), son of Vice President Joe Biden.

The owners of the popular chain Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant, Kevin Finn, Mark Edelson, and Kevin Davies (bottom, left photo), presented a check for $30,502.50 to CureSearch in front of the crowd. Iron Hill raised these funds by donating a portion of the proceeds of their delicious Double Chocolate Hill dessert. Edelson’s wife, Maureen Edelson, MD, worked for years as a pediatric oncologist and is now Medical Director of the Blood Bank and Stem Cell Processing Lab at A.I duPont Hospital.
