Christmas,” the owner said of the honey apple pie. “People talk about it, and when they make it at home they say, ‘Thanks for your recipe.’” It’s a simple, straightforward recipe, said Salem-Leasca, that people should be able to readily make at home. One caveat: she suggests against using McIntosh apples for the filling, as they can turn soft and mushy when cooked.

“We do make some of the other [apple pie contest] winners too, throughout the year,” the owner said of the diversity of apple pies offered. “There’s always an apple pie on the menu. This is one of the many great apple pies, a baker’s favorite.” Salem Cross tops the pie either with vanilla ice cream for those who prefer the a la mode experience, or fresh whipped cream.

A deep-dish version is also available (no bottom crust) with the popular Fireplace Feast: a unique and festive dining experience prepared on the open hearth of their great fieldstone fireplace. Salem

Cross is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, having first opened its doors in 1961. Some fall and winter selections from their menu include a cider brined pork chop and turkey pot pie. It is the apple pie, however, that the owner celebrates this time of year. Folks from not just New England but all over the world have sampled this pie, as Salem-Leasca noted that travelers from places as far away as Japan routinely visit in the fall and winter months. A quick scan of license plates in their parking lot shows many visitors driving here from Vermont and New York.

“This will bring back memories of Christmas past,” she said. “Fond memories of granny making apple pie. My dad always used to say, ‘The closest thing to motherhood is apple pie.’ Having an apple pie out in the beautiful countryside of West Brookfield – there’s nothing more homey or nostalgic than that.”
