As founder wins award,

Matthew’s Friends’ fundraising is a never ending quest

Even though Matthew’s Friends, which has its origins in Oxted, is one of the most respected charities in the country, the quest for funds is almost a daily chore. Now seven years old and founded in Oxted by Emma Williams, Matthew’s Friends is a champion of research and development into the use of dietary treatments for epilepsy. Emma began the charity after her struggle when her son

Matthew, now 17, had severe epilepsy when he was just nine months old. Emma was told the Ketogenic Diet would not help Matthew’s condition and she battled on, giving him a constant flow of medications which didn’t help his seizures and caused devastating side effects. Six years later a research trial of the Ketogenic Diet at the

Great Ormond Street Hospital by Professor Helen Cross involving Matthew and scores of other children with severe epilepsy had remarkable results. Within two weeks of starting the diet Matthew’s seizures had reduced by 90 per cent and within eight months he was off all medication. For Matthew though, the damage was done but inspired by her son Emma launched Matthew’s Friends to provide information, education resources and support for other families. The growth of Matthew’s Friends has been nothing short

13 of miraculous The charity has a distinguished medical board, headed up

by Professor Cross. £70,000 has been raised for the Great Ormond Street Hospital’s research into the Ketogenic Diet as well as laying on funding for centres around the UK There’s a Matthew’s Friends in South Africa which runs a child sponsorship programme and the charity has ties to over 20 countries in supporting the use of dietary treatments for epilepsy. The charity is now assisting adults who are failing medication with the use of the Modified Atkins Diet and Low Glycemic Index Treatment and works with the leading professionals in this field. This summer Matthew’s Friends took a giant leap forward by basing itself at the National Centre for Young People with Epilepsy in Lingfield and Emma’s team are welcoming patients from around the UK as well as from abroad. Clinics have begun operating and take referrals from the NHS and private patients for children over the age of one and adults. And Emma’s work in establishing Matthew’s Friends as a

recognised authority on dietary treatments for epilepsy did not escape the attention of radio station Heart FM which gave her its Local Heroes Mum of the Year award for 2011. Photo shows Emma with her award
