Become technically proficient in watercolor, acrylic, oil, or egg tempera. Whether your approach is classical or contemporary, representational or abstract, your exploration will help you discover your own unique perspective with each painting you create.

Plein Air Painting: From Introduction to Mastery DOUG DAWSON Ability: All Levels


Identify engaging outdoor subject matter while moving toward a mastery of depth creation, color harmony, linear perspective, and design. Learn the differences between working in overcast light and in full sunlight, and explore how to capture mood. Whether you are interested in painting water, trees, figures, or animals, you will be expertly guided in fine-tuning your work. Special Note: Instruction will be in oil and pastel; students may work in their medium of choice. A portable easel is required. Class will meet at the League on the first Tuesday of each month and off-site for the remaining dates. Thursdays are uninstructed. Studio Landscape DOUG DAWSON Ability: All Levels


Master the skills and techniques specific to painting landscapes in a studio environment. Learn how to use linear perspective, separate space into planes, create the illusion of depth, portray sunny or overcast conditions, and incorporate figures and animals. The use of alternative vantage points, large-scale painting, paper and canvas preparation, framing techniques, and alternative painting materials will also be explored. Each class will include a demonstration of specific techniques and individual instruction and critique. Special Note: Fridays are uninstructed. Experimental Techniques in Watercolor and Gouache SALLY ELLIOTT Ability: All Levels


Give your creativity a boost as you learn experimental watercolor and gouache techniques including resist, collage, working with filaments and fibers, and monoprinting. Work in transparent watercolor, gouache, or both while using your imagination to develop your own style and personal imagery. Individual instruction and creative development will be emphasized in a supportive atmosphere. Saturdays, 12:30–4 pm | Jan 7–28, 2012 | Register by 1/3 $119 for 4 weeks


Figure Painting with Oil KIM ENGLISH Ability: All Levels


This class concentrates on developing the ability to paint quickly and accurately—a skill that is useful in many situations. Students are encouraged to practice techniques for achieving a spontaneous yet controlled approach to painting, creating numerous small studies during each class while working from a live model. Special Note: Fridays are uninstructed, providing the opportunity to paint with a model in the studio. Tuesdays & Fridays, 1–4:30 pm | Jan 3–Apr 27, 2012 | Monthly ongoing $161 per month


Painting Lessons from the Masters JOSHUA FALLIK Ability: All Levels


Learn how to create movement, rhythm, mass, and line through demonstrations and study of reproductions of master works. Students will become skilled in determining correct proportions, measurements, and the use of light and shade to create dimensional effects. Live models will be used for figure and portrait studies. Broaden drawing and painting skills using classic tools of the masters including red and white chalk, cut reed pens, quills, and sepia washes. Thursdays, 1:30–5 pm | Sept 8, 2011–May 31, 2012 | Monthly ongoing $177 per month, $4 materials fee per month

Elements of Abstraction: A Complete Study MICHAEL GADLIN Ability: All Levels


This class will open your mind to abstractions in art: how they are planned, created, and validated as significant works. The class will deconstruct well-known pieces of traditional artwork to find the abstract qualities and intentions while exploring the possibilities of acrylics and other complementary media, producing pieces on canvas, wood, and paper surfaces. Developing a Personal Style in Painting ROB GRATIOT Ability: All Levels


This class will encourage students to explore their own personal painting styles, from realistic to abstract. The importance of basic art elements will be emphasized, as students learn to incorporate them into paintings and to create mood. A wide variety of subject matter and styles will be explored through assignments given every three to four weeks. Special Note: Students may work in oils or acrylics. Acrylic Painting: Using Photographs as a Tool in the Creative Process DAVID GRIFFIN Ability: All Levels


Learn to use photographs as a tool to explore the development of your individual style. Using acrylics as a medium, you will be encouraged to paint as realistically as you like, but also to feel free to diverge from strict representation and explore personal choices that will define your work. Learn techniques for transferring your image onto canvas and color mixing and layering to create jewel-like tones. Find out how to create the illusion of depth while you discover shortcuts to creating strong, detailed works of art. Wednesdays, 6–9 pm | Mar 7–Apr 25, 2012 | Register by 3/2 $252 for 8 weeks
