Jefferson Andrew Cooke School

Andrew Cooke Magnet School continues Growing Green.

Last year, Andrew Cooke Magnet School started

includes more classroom- related activities that reinforce the materials that are initially taught in the science room.

During the week of March 21st, 8th grade students from Jefferson headed to Washington DC for a few days of sightseeing, learning, and a trip of a lifetime. The students, along with Mrs. Laura Lipsky

to make sure he does something great with his life and as a teacher those are the best words you can hear. Overall, this was an amazing trip!” Laura Lipsky Abundes exclaimed.

Laura Abundes and Mary Carr took Jefferson Middle School 7th graders to Springfield to experience all our State Capital

piloting a science curriculum called Growing Green, written by GreenTown Waukegan and Andrew Cooke Magnet School. This fledgling program, now in its second year, has started blooming.

With lessons that coincide with the District provided FOSS science curriculum, Cooke students in Kindergarten through 5th grade are learning that science is not just a class but an everyday occurrence.

New to this years yield

Students are learning about soil, water, energy, air, plants/ flowers/pollination/seeds, and gardening. Waukegan and the school community are benefiting through the teaching of skills needed to grow food, cultivate native and horticultural plants to beautify the community, increase wildlife through butterfly gardens, improve nutrition, and practice sustainable horticulture.

Cooke Magnet School staff hopes to further increase Growing Green into more applications that will further benefit the Waukegan community, such as was the case when our 5th graders planted a rain garden at Roosevelt Park in May.
