by Doug Robinson Hudson taxpayers, the purpose of this story is to place you on notice. That notice is to make you aware that your wallet, your pocket book, your savings account is now at stake. The Town of Hudson Budget Committee will now begin the difficult task evaluating, analyzing and making the decisions which will affect every home owner, every tax payer, and every student who attends any of Hudson’s schools.
The budget for the Town of Hudson is broken
down into two parts: town and school while the town portion represents approximately $25 million, the school portion represents approximately $45 million. Combined, your taxes will be adjusted to raise the proposed $70 million to maintain your present services at a level you are now used to. Both school and town departments were instructed to come in at budget levels equal to
AHS’s Homecoming Dance Was a Special Night
submitted by Alvirne High School Spirit week at Alvirne High School
has always been a time to create special memories, but this year’s Homecoming Dance was extra special. The theme was a Black Light Semi-Formal and was advertised as a substance free night for students. More than 600 students attended the event which featured a disc jockey from radio station KISS 108, who kept the students on the dance floor all night. Pizza provided by Uno’s was on hand for all students as they danced the night away. The black light theme was evident as the white shirts and neon decorations glowed. Three special announcements made during the night; the crowd cheered as the Homecoming King and Queen was announced as seniors TJ Hebert and Krissy Rowe. The next announcement was the winner of the Spirit Week competition and
again the crowd roared as the Senior Class was victorious. The final announcement was a particularly special one. The senior class officers led by President Robbie Diamond wanted to make this night extra special and find a way to get students to come to this drug free event. What better way than to give away a car! Subaru of Nashua donated a 2000 black Mercury Sable to the event with Town Fair Tire and Sanel Auto Parts helping as well. The name was drawn and freshman Kayla Ramsdell was the winner. The crowd kept dancing until 11:11 on 11/11/11 and a good time was had by all. Alvirne’s Spirit Week was a great one and special thanks go out to all those who helped, especially Subaru of Nashua who went out of their way to help support the students in our community.
last year. Both town and school departments performed as asked; however, both town and school have been challenged with voter approved contract salary increases. Residents are invited to attend the budget meetings or view live on HCTV-22, or call their budget representative to voice their concerns, opinions, and thoughts. Town Budget reviews will be held on November 21, 28, 30, December 3. School Board reviews
will be held December 5, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 29. Wrap up and public hearings will be held January 3, 5, and 11. Hudson’s future and financial requirements are being discussed now, today. In a series of meetings, most at town hall, a Budget Committee budget will be finalized and presented to the voters next spring. Now is the time to voice your voice. Now is the time to participate.
Litchfield School Board Endorses ‘Blizzard Bag’ Program
by Doug Robinson The universal appeal of school snow days seems to disappear rather quickly once students, family, and staff realize that those missed days of school will need to be made up at the end of the school year. While families plan their vacations to begin in June, often time’s dates need to be changed, reservations need to be adjusted, and working families need to realign their vacation plans. State educational requirements require, in conjunction with teacher contracts require that School systems are to maintain a specific number of in schools day. The purpose of the Blizzard Bag program “is to allow
the Litchfield School District the ability to use time out of the classroom due to Snow/Emergency as ‘traditional’ class days. The District will be granted those hours necessary to fulfill a school year by providing students with at home learning opportunities that align with the district and state based standards. The district will need to meet the 80 percent completion standard to a “Day” to be granted.
Students are expected to complete work lessons at home during days that are designated by the superintendent of schools as emergency days. Students

have 48 hours to turn in their assignments to their teacher(s) and if not turned in, then the student will be marked absent. Different grade levels will have work content which will be specifically designed for specific grades with anticipated time limits. Teachers will also be required to participate in the Blizzard Bag Program. “Each teacher will post the assignment lessons that need to be completed during day one, two, and three. They will also have something indicating when or how often they will be available to answer questions throughout the day. All teachers will be available for three hours during the school day.” For the snow day to be accepted, “the district will need to meet the 80 percent completion stand for a “Day.”
During the March 2011 pilot of the Blizzard Bag
Program, the District realized an 89 percent completion rate.
In the survey which was administered after the Blizzard Bag Pilot, parents responded 91 percent favorably while only 69 percent of the staff supported the Blizzard Bag program. However, 81 percent of the staff stated that they would “be willing to explore this possibility.”
