Recruiting the right people and training them appropriately is the key to any people-facing business

of movement in terms of development but there’s a fairly active job market,” says Julian Long, managing director at Foundation Recruitment. “The investment market has been busy and that inevitably leads to a change in landlord/asset manager. “Recruitment is still buoyant compared to construction, for example,


which has been decimated - there are still quality candidates and it’s a maturing sector.” In recent years, Long has seen a change in the type of experience


employers are looking for from centre management candidates. “In terms of background, all employers want their staff to really understand retail and be able to discuss with retailers about how

hopping centre development is sluggish at best, with the next opening expected in 2013, but investment is faring better – and with transactions come appointments, meaning that


their business is actually performing,” he explains. “For some, that’s more important than shopping centre experience, so candidates don’t necessarily need to have come from another scheme. “This has become prevalent over the last couple of years, at a


time when the economy has meant that there’s an increased need for centre management staff to be able to sympathise and empathise with struggling retailers.” Training is just as sought after as shopping centres are having to


focus more and more on customer service and experience to ward off competition.


Ray Cliff had 25 years experience in the industry (he was centre manager at CSC’s Harlequin in Watford before launching The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in 1998) when he set up shopping centre management consultancy Optimise six years ago. The business has set-up, performance and recruitment arms but it’s training that Cliff’s beginning to focus on.
