Coastal View & Moor News Issue 17 Local PCSO raises cash along the wall
it as the scenery was stunning. At times the wall got so steep, people had trouble trying not to fall backwards and at others it meant crossing one metre paths with drops of hundreds of metres on both sides to the valleys below.”
Paul spent his days walking up to nine hours a day along the wall that never seemed to have two steps the same, as he told us that sometimes you had to pull yourself up from step to step as they were so big.
Paul went on to say: “One particular night meant stopping off at a farm house miles from any major city and sleeping on what some on the trek described as ‘Table Tops’ with no showers or toilets except for those across the farm yard. This, as you can imagine was not appealing, with the temperature dropping at night with very little light to guide you, and of course not being western toilets required a certain skill!”
L
ocal Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Paul Payne based at
Guisborough Police Station has recently walked the Great Wall of China in aid of Kidney Research
On October 6th, Paul travelled to Beijing and spent ten days trekking the wall with 29 other people from all over the country. All those involved had some connection with Kidney Research, whether as transplant patients or whose family had been affected by various kidney related deceases. In Paul’s case it was due to his wife Bev losing a kidney to cancer three
years ago.
Paul started his trek on the Huangyaguan part of the wall near Beijing which was built in 557AD getting a good indication of what was ahead of him. He then went off the beaten track for four days, as one of 500 people a year allowed by the Chinese government to trek along some of the oldest and most scenic parts of the wall. This included trekking through woods, farms and at times parts of the wall that can only be described as rubble, and dating as far back as 700BC. Paul told Coastal View: “It was well worth
Paul described the journey and said: “As it continued, all 29 trekkers bonded and helped each other when the going got tough. Friendships were developed that will last forever.” With thousands of photos taken and many miles crossed, the China Trek was just part of the ongoing fund raising efforts of Paul. Together with his wife Bev and with the help of family, friends and the residents of Boosbeck, Lingdale, Moorsholm, Stanghow and Guisborough (the areas Paul covers as a PCSO) the year long attempt to raise much needed funds for Kidney Research has resulted in £4500 already being donated.
Paul intends to continue his fundraising
efforts and has other charity nights planned for the coming year. We will keep you up to date with these events, as and when they come up and hopefully help Paul to raise many more thousands of pounds for Kidney Research. Paul concluded by saying: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped or donated their time and money in reaching this amazing amount of money which we hope will make a difference.
“I will continue to do whatever I can, to help the charity continue their great work in helping save the lives of people in the future.”
If you would like to donate to Paul’s chosen charity Kidney Research then he can be contacted via Guisborough Police station or Coastal View & Moor News.
