Residents should be concerned by elected representatives who say a council chamber is not the place to raise issues which affect residents, or resort to name calling. Such representatives clearly think that politicians should sit quiet or deal in moronic political banter in a council chamber/parliament. Accordingly, we can let the following scenario slip by without mention: Energy prices can escalate further, cuts can be made to every service, there can be fewer opportunities to find a job, and many can start to live in fear of paying their bills. Executives can receive 47% more pay again next year, and the UK’s very richest can be 20% richer again with 38 people in the UK owning more than the 4% of the total income of the country they already have. The UK’s debt can be £150bn higher next year – and up to £330bn can again be avoided in tax, mainly by the superrich. Alternatively, we could rid parliament and the council chambers of the self-serving and inadequate by raising these kind of issues. Some of our area’s councillors are being caught red-handed by the questions and smart actions of those with honest intentions and who represent the views of the silent majority. The self-serving can sit and be quiet if they’d prefer – there are those who have no intention of staying quiet a day longer. It’s time politicians stopped facilitating billionaires and made them pay for the crisis they created – not the innocent person on the street. Cllr Dr Tristan Learoyd Marske-by-the-Sea.
Dear Editor
Having watched the various conferences of the TUC, Liberal Democrats, Labour, and the Conservatives, it makes me realise that I
enjoyed the best times as far as conferences are concerned. Having attended 24 annual conferences of the communication workers union since 1971, and been a delegate for my union at various TUC and Labour Party conferences I don’t think I will watch any more conferences in the future. What really puts me off these days is that all the conferences come across as being stage-managed, the main speakers, especially the leaders are now using an autocue when making their speeches, which I think makes them look like robots instead of human beings speaking from the heart. Surely they can take time out to learn their speeches and to show they really know what they’re talking about, instead of relying on other people to write their speeches and come across as insincere by reading word for word. Dear editor
It was disappointed to read Councillor Steve Kay’s shameless article in your last edition (‘Weekly Collections’, issue 16). Councillor Kay notes that the people of Redcar & Cleveland are getting a raw deal from fortnightly bin collections however he fails to point out that he was a leading member of the Tory/Lib Dem/Independent Coalition led council who voted in the ‘burdensome and inefficient’ collection regime to begin with.
Perhaps Councillor Kay should consider why we are in our current predicament - through the majority decision of his former cronies - before setting his stall (and bin) out for change. Ben Briggs Skelton & Brotton Branch Labour Party

would enjoy most. This new play area in Tees Street, will give young people the opportunity to play safely knowing they had an input into the choices.
Councillor Sheelagh Clarke, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and Rural Affairs said “ The young people of the area had the chance to choose the items they wanted by working with the teams. This is a great way to bring the community together and give the young people the opportunity to invest in their own area”.
