t’s Birthday time again for
the Well being Centre. The centre is now 4 years old. It hardly seems any time at all
since we celebrated last year with a party. Birthdays, as with all anniversaries, are often a time of reflection. In the day to day busy pace of life today, we often do what we do and have little time to reflect on why we do it or if it’s what we really want.
Thinking back to when the idea of the centre came about, one of the most important aims for me was creating an organisation that was able run without many of the unnecessary hoops that we are forced to jump through and without all the box ticking of questions that are often pointless. When we trust people and give them understanding in my experience that’s what we get back more often than not. Yes, at times in our lives we feel let down but if we base the way we live on mistrust then it can dramatically affect the way we live our lives and not for the better.
When people ask, “ What happens at the
centre?”, it is hard to define in less than a book, the many roles the centre plays. The common theme is of course Well Being of mind, body and spirit. One of the biggest uses of the centre is for likeminded people to meet. Some people come to learn new skills such as jewellery making, others come to receive therapies, some for personal development and to build confidence, some come for support when life becomes a struggle , others to explore the more spiritual aspects of life through a course or a tarot reading and some come simply to make purchases from the shop. What I love most is the diversity of people- all individuals with very different belief systems but all using the same space. There is something for everyone from meditation for relaxation or a luxurious massage. The centre is home for more than 14 therapist and workshop leaders as well as guest facilitators. The fact that there are so many people working under the same roof with a vast knowledge and expertise within their fields, allows for the best possible care for customers. Once a month we hold taster evenings where people can try a mini treatment at a reduced cost as well as meet new people and find out what works for them.

fashion show was held in the Cricket Club,
Redcar by Bonmarche and Greenwoods stores. This showcased the Autumn/Winter and Christmas latest clothing and accessories. The event was arranged by the Friends of Redcar Cemetery to start a fund to raise money for a memorial to the RAF in Redcar Cemetery. £300 was made on the night and our thanks go to everyone who helped. It was a truly community effort with Tony the Greenwood’s Manager and Sue the Manageress of Bonmarche introducing the fashions The girls from Bonmarche store, Victoria from Spotlight magazine and Paul and Robb from R.C.B.C modelling. The staging was kindly lent by St Benedict’s School. Thanks to the Friends for the continued support and the staff of the Cricket Club who made us so welcome. Ged Fleming (Chairman of the Friends)
Big Lottery Funding helps to keep
organisations afloat
Redcar MP Ian Swales has today congratulated local groups who have been awarded grants from the Big Lottery Fund. The Big Lottery Fund distributes half of the money raised by the National Lottery to community projects across the UK. Since Liberal Democrat MP, Ian Swales hosted a drop-in awareness surgery for constituents and community groups, the number of applications for Lottery funding increased, and there were four times as many awards in 2011 for groups in Redcar as there were in 2010. The Junction Foundation were awarded £483,695 towards their ‘Engage@thejunction’ project aimed at supporting vulnerable young people, and the Survivors of Domestic Abuse (SODA) won £60,000 towards their work with survivors and their families of domestic abuse. Commenting, local MP Ian Swales said: “I am delighted in the increase of funding for local groups in Redcar since my drop-in surgery; it is great to see more community groups benefitting from the available funding.”
“There is money available to help with local projects, and it is brilliant to see the money positively affecting the lives of
people in our local community.” Along with the Big Lottery Fund, the Arts Council England also has grants available to award to local groups and projects. In 2010/11 the Arts Council England awarded £2,811,773 in grants to successful applicants in the North East of England, 34.6% of all applications in the North East were successful. However Redcar was awarded no grants. Although no groups in Redcar applied for funding this year, in 2009/10 67% of applications from Redcar were successful, totalling £29,650. Commenting on the Arts Council awards, Ian Swales MP said:
“It is great that there is funding available from the Arts Council England to support local art projects, the money can really make a difference to groups and their local communities.” “With grants available from as little as £1000, I would encourage all local groups, no matter how small to apply for an award.” Groups can find out more about the Big Lottery Fund at:
