3 BASH say the fight goes on
longer about jobs; it’s about quality of life for every Boosbeck resident and especially for the children.”
Cllr Dunning was asked if the abattoir was going to get any sort of financial help from the Council and he gave his assurance that no grants would be given.
BASH Committee with local councillors and Council leader George Dunning T
he fight of the Boosbeck residents to stop the re-opening of the old slaughterhouse there goes on. Following the initial meeting in the Village Hall, a further public meeting has been held, which an estimated 150 people attended. The purpose of the meeting was to identify and select a committee of residents who would represent the whole village and speak
on their behalf.
Support at this meeting by local councillors was evident, and it was good to see Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Councillor George Dunning in attendance and showing his support for the village. Cllr Dunning said: “I wouldn’t like to think this was going to happen where I live and I will do everything I can to help. It’s no
Cannabis Farm discovered B
oosbeck’s PCSO Paul Payne and Neighbourhood Policing Officers are thanking the community they work for after a cannabis farm was discovered in a basement in a house in the village. Concerned residents had contacted officers, reporting strange smells coming from the area of Serenity Hollow. Officers began looking into the claims and at around 9am on Friday (11th November) Redcar & Cleveland District Drugs Unit and the District Support Unit raided the house where they discovered a large commercial cannabis farm containing over 500 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £107, 000 - though it was clear to officers that there was potential for far greater financial returns in this criminal enterprise. Two men aged 57 and 46 and a 32 year old woman were arrested on suspicion of production of cannabis and possession with intent to supply cannabis.
The plants have been sent for analysis and
specialist growing equipment including lights, heaters and fans were seized and destroyed.
Insp Charlie Bell said: “We are delighted that this East Cleveland community came to their local PCSO, Paul Payne, secure in the knowledge that their concerns would be listened to and acted upon.
“This was a substantial cannabis farm, expertly set up and we are pleased to have removed drugs which would have been destined for the towns and villages of East Cleveland if not further afield. “I would like to thank those members of the public who came forward with information and to reassure all residents that any concerns regarding drug dealing or any other crime will be dealt with swiftly and efficiently.”

Cllr Dunning went on to explain: “There is no reason why the Council can’t grant a ‘lawful development certificate’ for the abattoir. The use of the building has not changed, therefore in law we must allow it.” To explain this further, any business is allowed to re-open and granted permission to do so, as long as that business is the same: eg a shop couldn’t re-open as a pub, but can legally continue to be a shop, even if the business changes hands. Almost 1000 people have signed a petition against the abattoir, and along with local names there is also support from Guisborough, Brotton, Carlin How, Moorsholm and Fryup and more than 100 letters of objection have already been written. Greenside View housing estate, which is very close to the abattoir site, was built after the abattoir closed in 2007. With 48 of the Greenside’s 50 households signing the petition, feelings are running high and one resident told Coastal View: “The majority of people on Greenside
would not have bought their home here if they had known there was any possibility of the slaughterhouse re-opening. We understood the site was earmarked for a similar housing development as ours.” Since the last public meeting, the BASH (Boosbeck Against the SlaughterHouse) has been formed.
BASH has recently published a newsletter which has been distributed to every home in the village, and keeping residents up to date. The newsletter states the main concerns of the villagers after running a survey. These are as follows:
Smell from the blood tanks 94% Close to the play area and school 68% Close to housing 61% Distressing noise 61% Increased heavy traffic 59% Rats being attracted back 46%
BASH told Coastal View; “We’re telling the Council, it’s just inappropriate in 2011 for a slaughterhouse to be situated in the middle of a residential area. We don’t want it and our children don’t want it!”
If you would like to show your support , you can write a letter of objection and take it to the Boosbeck Post Office, where you will also find the petition which you could sign.
