CONSEQUENCES

Until fairly recently, events such as death, occurring subsequent to an offence, were not an essential part of the offence itself. (Although these events may have been taken into consideration as aggravating factors.) However, this is no longer the case and there is now an offence called “Causing Death by Dangerous Driving” for which the sentence can be up to 14 years imprisonment. Even more recently, the offence of “Causing Death by Careless Driving” was introduced and this carries up to five years imprisonment. It’s a sobering thought that statistics show that most of us will drive carelessly at

A scheme designed to make life easier for residents facing important changes to their personal circumstances is set to be launched in Redcar and Cleveland.

People wanting to report births and deaths have previously needed to inform a host of different authorities separately. But the ‘Tell Us Once’ service, which will come into effect on November 1, ensures that people only need to make one phone call or visit to a council office - and the information will then be passed on to all relevant agencies.

least once in our lifetime and if someone was accidentally killed as a result of this we could end up in prison.

This just goes to show how important it is to consider the safety of other road users as well as our own.

The Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council initiative will prove particularly useful for parents of newborn children and the next of kin of anyone who has recently died. People taking advantage of the ‘Tell Us Once’ service can have a range of organisations contacted on their behalf, including the Department for Work and Pensions, JobCentre Plus, HM Revenue and Customs, housing benefit and council tax

benefit offices. Councillor George Dunning, Leader of the Council, said: “People facing big changes in their lives have always had to repeat the same information over and over again to various different organisations, often at stressful or traumatic times. “This has involved making numerous phone calls, posting certificates and all manner of other administrative issues to deal with. “The Tell Us Once service puts an end to all of that, meaning people no longer have to speak to several local and central government departments, which is particularly important when financial matters need addressing swiftly.” For further information about ‘Tell Us Once’ in Redcar and Cleveland, contact Guisborough Register Office on 01287 632564 or log onto www.redcar–cleveland. gov.uk

Eco Sustainability Ltd Snowflakes

A

pologies for beginning this article with some topical trivia.

Until the 1800’s no one knew that every snowflake was ‘different’ until a gentleman by the name of Wilson Bentley began a serious study of them. But how from all the billions that fall can we be sure that no two are alike?. Actually, there is no scientific reason why two or more could not be identical but given that each snowflake is composed of over 180 billion molecules, the odds are not in favour.

Feel better for knowing that? Another snowy question often asked is how much rain is equivalent to an inch of snow?. Well apparently it depends on the type of snow (some is fluffier than others) but in general one inch of rain water would equal about 6 inches of wet snow or 12 inches of the light puffy stuff. Steal the show with that little pearl of wisdom eh ?

Back to serious matters; we soon will be watching the snow from our windows and cranking up the heating, wishing it didn’t cost so much to keep warm. Lots of adverts and announcements on TV are suddenly offering advice on how to save money on energy (“switch suppliers , turn down the thermostat by 1 degree, wrap up warm” ,etc ,etc) which is all very well & good but we tend to wait for help to come to us rather than be pro-active in these matters. Our council have some fantastic people working in the Energy / Warm & Well & Re-Cycling teams and openly encourage people to be involved, and we

at ESL are also trying to get OUR local communities to come to us with their concerns.

I personally love this area and one of the things I admire most is the passion our people put into issues that are important to them. Look at the number of awards several of our villages have won in the ‘Villages in Bloom’ competitions this year. And whether it’s band practice night, football training, bingo in the village hall or a few pints in the pub, said activities are sacred to ‘Clevelanders’. This enthusiasm is what our LEADER funded project with ESL were hoping to tap into ; we want YOU to make energy saving a real focus. You as individuals and communities in general can gain by being more aware of energy saving issues; we can help but it’s YOUR drive that would bring success. • Make sure the brightness setting on your TV is suitable for your room. The brighter the TV is set, the more energy it uses. The factory settings on TVs are often too bright for home use.

• Keep all internal doors closed to keep the heat in each room and turn radiators off or

down in any unused rooms. • Putting a curtain over the front door helps keeps the draughts out and warmth in.

Finding the right mechanic

Guisborough man Graham Wilde decided he wanted to start up in business for himself. That’s how Auto Engineers in

Guisborough came about. Graham told Coastal View: “I did my apprenticeship and then in 1989 I bought my boss out.”

This well established business, which employs four local people, carry out all aspects of

car repairs, including general servicing, welding, diagnostics and MOTs. Mechanic Steve said: “Even though we have been here for a long time, it’s amazing how many local people don’t know we exist. The garage is close to Sunnyfield House and can be accessed by turning off Westgate onto Westgate Road, turn left onto Reid Terrace and take the immediate left,

down the alleyway to Merryweather’s Yard. That’s where we are.” Auto Engineers offers a free pick up and delivery service as well as a free courtesy car if required.

They are open six days a week, Monday - Friday 8.30am – 5pm, Saturdays 9am – 12pm, so support your local garage today by giving them a call on 01287 635720.
