seven-year-old girl undergoing treatment for a brain tumour is
helping other sick children, with support from Yorkshire Building Society’s Charitable Foundation.
Enna Stephens, from New Marske, is currently receiving chemotherapy following surgery to remove a tumour. Now Yorkshire Building Society’s agency at Marske By The Sea has arranged for charitable donations to two causes close to Enna’s heart – the Sick Children’s Trust and the Unique School of Dance. Enna’s family has received support from the Sick Children’s Trust, which provides home from home accommodation at Crawford House for the families of seriously ill children receiving treatment in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. A donation of £855.36 from the
Yorkshire’s Charitable Foundation will pay for a new freezer, which will be used by up to a dozen families at a time. Crawford House manager Gail Stonley
said: “We are all thrilled that we will have a freezer for families to use in time for Christmas.”
Since her operation earlier this year, Enna has been well enough to return to her ballet lessons at the Unique School of Dance in Redcar, which has been given a £250 donation from Yorkshire Building Society’s Community Investment Fund. The Yorkshire’s Marske agency, run by Bede Financial Group in Redcar Road, also has made Enna an honoray member of its Squirrel Saver Club, for young savers, and their mascot Red the Squirrel called in to Westgarth Primary School to meet Enna and present the charitable donations. Nicki Armstrong from Bede Financial Group said: “We were all touched by Enna’s story and how courageous she has been in dealing with her condition and treatment. “We are pleased to support the Sick Children’s Trust and the Unique School of Dance, which both have helped Enna and her family so much.”
Winter warmth I
n the last issue of Coastal View & Moor News we told you about the
Winter Warmth campaign that is led by Cleveland Fire Brigade. The aim of the campaign is to help vulnerable people across Teesside keep warm in the cold weather. Drop in sessions were held in Middlesbrough and Redcar hospitals however nothing took place in East Cleveland.
Both ourselves and Councillor David Williams (Westworth) have contacted several agencies involved in the campaign but none of them have been able to tell us what is happening in our area. Cllr Williams said: “East Cleveland was missed out when the drop in sessions were organised and I am looking for this area to be included. We have lots of vulnerable people in our communities as well as having
the worst weather. “I will continue to try and get some answers on the questions I have asked.” Hopefully we will be able to tell you how this valuable campaign can help you in our next issue.
ocal MP, Ian Swales, recently visited the Grangetown Sure Start centre,
where he was introduced to a number of employees who work in both this centre and other Sure Starts across Redcar and Cleveland. The centre offers health services, employment services, two year old free nursery education, early learning and development engagement as well as family support and parenting groups. Ian was taken on a tour of the centre, visiting the ‘little stars’ two year old free nursery placements, where he met several children playing in the craft area, before going outside to see the adventure playground. Both areas are very well
stocked with toys, safe play areas and educational areas for all the children. After the tour, he was made very welcome with homemade scones and tea, and a Q and A with staff members. Ian was happy to take any questions on any topic, and they covered everything from unemployment through to family health visitors and the number of children engaging with the centre in Grangetown and beyond. Ian said after the visit ‘’I was
really impressed with the facilities that the Sure Start centre has to offer for their residents, and I was pleased to hear that over 70% of children from the Grangetown area engage with this service. ‘’The staff there are clearly passionate about the work they do, and are striving to engage 100% of the families in the area. The Liberal Democrats are clear that early years education is essential for a good start in life, it is why I am glad that we have guaranteed 15 hrs of childcare for every two year old from a disadvantaged background, and would encourage everyone to engage with their local Sure Start centre. ‘’
