Be safe and be seen this winter

T

he children of the Lakes Primary School will help launch Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s ‘Be Safe & Be Seen’ road safety campaign on Thursday, November 3. As the days become shorter, the number of accidents tends to increase due to wet or icy road surfaces, bad weather and poor light even during daylight hours. Children become more vulnerable as they are less visible to motorists.

So for this reason Redcar & Cleveland has joined the national government backed Think! road safety campaign in encouraging children to wear bright or fluorescent clothes during the day and reflective clothing after dark, to make sure they can be easily seen.

Cabinet Member for Highways,

Transportation and Planning, Councillor Helen McLuckie, said: “ We’re supporting this important seasonal initiative as we want our children to stay safe when travelling to and from school.”

Drivers also need to be cautious and make sure they use their lights, slow down and look out for cyclists and pedestrians. In winter it is even more important to make sure your vehicle is well maintained -keep lights clean, make sure there is anti- freeze in the radiator, additive in the washer bottle and check tyres.

brates clean-up success

ore than 15 tonnes of waste was collected as an East Cleveland community was given a major sprucing up. Residents of Liverton Mines were given the chance to dispose of any waste for free when Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and housing provider Coast & Country staged a ‘Bring Out Your Dross’ event.

And the initiative proved a hit, with everything from white and electrical goods to gas bottles and car parts taken away. The event was held in Liverton Mines for the third time in the past four years, with the total amount of waste collected now standing at 60 tonnes.

Other environmental work was carried out, particularly at the community centre where litter was swept up, grass cut, undergrowth cleared and weeds removed from nearby footpaths. Vandalised equipment was removed from the children’s play area and the park re-opened.

Housing advisors, police and fire service officials were also on hand to answer residents’ queries throughout the day. Councillor Lynn Pallister, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal, said: “This event was arranged following an earlier ‘walkabout’ session in the village and designed to respond to issues raised by residents.

“I am delighted that it was such a great success, with so many residents taking part.”

rebuilding schools funding

Council to bid for R

edcar and Cleveland Council’s Cabinet gave approval this week to

bid for Government funding to rebuild four of its schools.

The following schools have been included in the Redcar and Cleveland bid - Nunthorpe Secondary School and the Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough, Handale Primary School in Brotton and Westgarth Primary School in Marske. Councillor Joan Guy, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Education said: “Despite the money available being limited it is important we take every opportunity we can to ensure our schools have the best facilities possible. Head Teachers and Governing Body representatives from all four schools are supportive of the bid which will enable us to continue to raise standards in our schools.” The Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme is designed to address those schools in England that are in the worst condition under a five year PFI programme. It is envisaged that between 100-300 schools nationally will be rebuilt through the programme and that the programme will include a mix of primary, secondary, special schools, sixth form colleges and alternative school provision. A bid has been made for each school and it is not known whether one or all of the schools will be accepted.

It is expected that successful bids will be announced by December 2011.
